Two University of Stirling students have been shortlisted in the running for the Young Sports Person of the Year at the Scottish Sports Awards.

Sport & Exercise Science student Ross Murdoch and Mathematics student Marc Austin have been named in the final three at the Sunday Mail sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards 2013.

Breaststroke swimming sensation Murdoch broke the Scottish record and posted the third fastest time in the world this year en route to qualification for his first FINA World Swimming Championships.

Austin signed off in style from his junior triathlon career by winning the silver medal at the World Championships in London, adding to a bronze at the European Championships.

Both athletes are now targeting setting the standards to qualify for Team Scotland at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

British Boys Amateur golf champion Ewen Ferguson completes the shortlisted trio, with the coveted prize to be announced at a star-studded awards ceremony on Thursday 5 December at the Glasgow Thistle Hotel.

Former Winning Students wheelchair tennis player Gordon Reid has been shortlisted in the Disability Sports category and Glasgow City LFC, which features a plethora of Winning Students-supported footballers, is shortlisted for the Team of the Year.

In 2012, Badminton star Kirsty Gilmour – a Film Making and Screen Writing student at the University of the West of Scotland - shared the coveted prize with swimmer Craig Benson. Stirling Mathematics student and leading Scottish amateur golfer Jack McDonald was also shortlisted.
