There were a number of Winning Students athletes in action at the weekend as various sports start to get into their summer season.

Portland and the Old Course at Troon played host to the Helen Holm Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship from Friday to Sunday. All four of our competing golfers made the cut after two rounds at Portland and played the Old Course on Sunday, with Welsh wonder Nia Greville (University of Stirling) finishing highest in 15th. Away from the Ayrshire coast, we had a whole host of rowers in sunny Strathclyde on Saturday and Sunday for the Strathclyde Park Regatta and Scottish Student Sport Rowing Championships.

Kieran Brown and Matthew Curtis (University of Edinburgh) both had a successful weekend; picking up Bronze as part of the SSS Championships Eights, Silver in the Double Scull, and Gold in the Quadruple Scull, with Brown also taking Silver in the Single Scull. Their Edinburgh “B” Team, including Henry Millar and Graham Ord, beat them to Gold in the Eights, with the pair also picking up Gold in the Coxed Fours and Ord adding a third Gold in the Coxless Pairs. Our Edinburgh girls also performed well, with Maddie Arlett taking Silver in the Eights alongside Victoria Howard and Gold in the Quadruple Scull with Robyn Hart-Winks.

Our athletes from Robert Gordon University also had strong weekends with Iona Riley picking up a Silver in the Double Scull and Lewis McCue adding Silvers of his own in the Coxless Pairs and Double Scull, along with Gold in the Single Scull. Emma McDonald (University of Glasgow) was unstoppable, whether alone or in a team; winning Gold in the Coxless Pairs, Single Scull, and Lightweight Single Scull.

Outwith the Championship, University of Stirling’s Gregor Maxwell picked up Silvers in the Open Single Scull and Open Lightweight Single Scull, whilst Lewis McCue added an Open Restricted Double Scull Gold to his Championship medals. Click here to see the full results from the weekend’s rowing.

Turning to International news, some of our athletes, past and present, were involved with the Great Britain set up over the weekend. On Friday, British Swimming announced their squad for the World Championships in Kazan, which included six Scots. Ross Murdoch (University of Stirling) and Stephen Milne (Perth College UHI) were joined by Winning Students alumni Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick.

Great Britain’s Women’s Hockey faced a double header against Japan on Sunday and Monday as they continue preparations for the World League Semi Finals in June. Emily Maguire, one of the first ever Winning Students, joined Sarah Robertson (University of Edinburgh) in the squad and both played their part as GB won 2-1 and 5-1, respectively.

Well done to all our Winning Students participating over the weekend and congratulations to the SSS Championships medal winners and our GB representatives.
