VIDEO: Smith and Bennett on their way to Gold Coast13 December 2017
Winning Students athletes Allan Smith and Chris Bennett are the latest scholars to be selected for the Team Scotland squad heading to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Joining the Winning Students swimmers already announced in the team, Smith and Bennett were announced alongside 23 fellow track and field athletes and will represent Scotland in the high jump and hammer throw events respectively.
Having competed for Team GB in this summer’s World University Games, Edinburgh Napier University student, Smith, is relishing the opportunity to compete at his first ever Commonwealth Games. He said: “I’m extremely proud. It’s not that often you get to represent your country at an international level and the Commonwealth Games only comes around every four years.
“Because it’s a Scottish team, everyone knows everyone already very well so going forward I know the environment will be positive and everyone is very supportive.
“I’m looking forward to, first of all, making the final and then what happens after that is up to me.”
Meanwhile, Bennett, who is studying Business Management and Sport at the Open University in Scotland, will head to the Gold Coast for his second Games and is aiming to improve on his performance from Glasgow in 2014. He said: “Glasgow was my first major championships experience so it’s always special to go back to the Commonwealth Games and it’s also one of the only times we get to compete for Scotland.
“I don’t think I showed my potential in 2014 so, for me, Gold Coast was always going to be the big one and I want to do myself justice when I get out there. I literally can’t until the competition.”
The latest selections bring the total number of athletes named to Team Scotland to 96, following team announcements for Swimming and Lawn Bowls in October and Squash, Boxing, Triathlon, Shooting, Para-Bowls and Weightlifting in November. Further selections will be made in the new year, with the full team due to be announced by 1 March 2018.
