World University Games call ups for Winning Students 100 athletes

A team of athletes from across Scotland’s national sports scholarship programme, Winning Students 100, have been selected to compete at this year’s FISU World University Games.

Nine individuals from across five sports have been chosen for the Team GB Students squad. The prestigious international university multi-sport Games provide a platform for talented students to compete alongside competitors from countries all around the world.

Organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the upcoming summer edition of the FISU World University Games will be held at Rhine-Ruhr in Germany, from  16 – 27 July 2025.

Involving around 10,0000 athletes and officials from across 150 countries, the Games are widely recognised as a unique performance environment and a significant formative development opportunity for athletes, with 18 sports featuring in this year’s programme.

A duo of University of Stirling athletes are set to compete in Artistic Gymnastics. Crystelle Lake and Cameron Lynn will showcase their incredible talents across the apparatus, with the hope of landing a top result.

Taekwondo supreme Erin Shaw will also travel to Germany this summer. This University of Glasgow student already has a British National Champion title to her name and looks set to shine.

In athletics, the University of Edinburgh’s Stephen Mackenzie will be in action, while the University of St Andrews’ Sophia Elizabeth Issberner will be looking to row her way onto the podium.

A four-strong cohort of swimmers will compete in a range of disciplines in the pool. Edinburgh Napier University’s Anna Morgan, and Ciara Schlosshan, Archie Goodburn and Brodie Gordon-Gibson, all from the University of Edinburgh, will show what they have got against the best student swimmers in the world, at university level.

Alongside the highest level of competition, the participants will enjoy an unrivalled cultural experience, and the Games have proven to be a launchpad for the careers of many internationally successful athletes. We are committed to supporting Scotland’s most talented student athletes as they pursue their dreams, and wish these nine individuals the very best of luck out in Germany this July."

Scotland’s national sports scholarship programme, Winning Students 100, supports the most talented student athletes in Higher and Further education as they pursue sporting success and gain academic qualifications.

The Winning Students 100 athletes are among 110 students backed for success in 2024-25 across 32 sports and 19 colleges and universities.

Winning Students 100 is funded by sportscotland and the Scottish Funding Council, managed by Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence, the University of Stirling, and delivered in partnership with Scotland’s higher education and further education sector.

The FISU World University Games will take place across five host cities in the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia, from 26 - 27 July 2025.
