A talented cohort of Winning Students-supported swimmers have been selected to compete at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships and the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships later this year, after incredible success in the pool at the recent Aquatics GB Swimming Championships.
A total of 19 student athletes, training at institutions across Scotland, who receive valuable Winning Students 100 funding, took part in thrilling competition at the very top of the sport, setting a host of Scottish, British and European records and taking 18 podium places between them at the national competition in London.
The culmination of these impressive results sees several swimmers included in the Worlds teams, while others will look to build on their successes throughout the season.
Winning Students para-swimmer Faye Rogers, who trains at the University of Aberdeen and was the first ever recipient of the prestigious André Reibig Medal, created in memory of passionate Winning Students 100 advocate André Reibig, continued her incredible run of form and is set to shine on the world stage once again.
The dedicated athlete broke an impressive 14 records in London, including two World records, four European records and eight British records.
Faye looks set to build upon her current Women’s S10 100m Butterfly World and Paralympic titles after breaking the European mark in that event twice, in addition to smashing S10/SM10 British records in the 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 200 individual medley, to qualify for the World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore. She also lowered her world leading time in the 200m butterfly – which qualified her for an Olympic pathway B Final in London.
Elsewhere, University of Stirling swimmers Angharad Evans, Keanna MacInnes and Katie Shanahan were each selected for the Worlds in Singapore after winning an individual event at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships and recording a time that equals or betters the required qualifying times.
Angharad Evans set a new British Senior record in the women’s 100m breaststroke in eye-catching fashion, breaking her own record with a world-leading time to take gold. She also managed to set a personal best and new Scottish record in the women’s 200m breaststroke.
Keanna MacInnes came out on top in the women’s 200m butterfly, setting a new Scottish record in the process, and also won in the 100m butterfly. Elsewhere, Katie Shanahan won the women’s 100m backstroke, putting down back-to-back personal bests, alongside victory in the women’s 200m backstroke, before taking silver in the women’s 200m individual medley.
Team mate Holly McGill will make her World Championships debut after placing second in an individual event and recording a time that falls into the selection times. Holly was third in the women’s 100m backstroke, after hitting a personal best time in the event, and nabbed silver in the 200m.
Winning Students 100 athletes who enjoyed immense success at Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, despite missing out on Worlds selection, included Anna Morgan who started the week taking her first senior British medal in the women’s 50m breaststroke and went on to win bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke.
Women’s 50m butterfly swimmer Ciara Schlosshan broke the Scottish record to take bronze and Lucy Grieve bagged silver in the women’s 100m butterfly. Archie Goodburn swam to silver in the men’s 50m breaststroke, George Smith went home with bronze in the 200m breaststroke and Edinburgh University’s Brodie Gordon-Gibson swam a lifetime best in the 50m butterfly final, finishing fifth.
